Should I already be studying in the Easter Holidays?

There’s so much going on in Term 1, with starting a new year, summer sports and other activities, and getting to know your new teachers. It can seem a bit daunting to think about studying in the Easter holidays, and despite some teachers advising students on what to study, I doubt anyone actually does it!

So, here are a couple of useful things for you to ask yourself during the holidays, to make sure that Term 2 starts off really well:

  • Did I complete all my assessments on time and to the standard I wanted?
  • Did I make a routine at the start of the year and stick to it?
  • Did I ask questions if I wasn’t sure about something?
  • What progress did I make on any goals I have set?
  • Was I organised?

If you answered ‘no’ or ‘nothing’ to any of these questions, spend some time trying to work out a plan for next term. It is so important that you get these basics sorted – your study life will feel like a breeze when you’re flying towards achieving your goals!

Now, studying in the Easter break… If you were taught anything for external examinations in the first term (or you have internal assessments you already know about that are due next term), you should be doing something. Having a nine-month break between learning something and then revising it is a recipe for disaster. At the end of last year, one of the techniques I recommended was ‘spaced repetition,’ (check out the article here) where you space out your studying so that you have the best chance of remembering what you need to.

Go through these easy steps for the material that you’ve learned so far!

  1. Make sure all your notes are in check, you have everything written down that you need to know (including all the little tricks your teacher showed you!), you understand as much as possible and you don’t have any unanswered questions.
  2. Next, review your content a couple of times, using whichever technique you prefer. Try to be able to recall as much as possible!
  3. Repeat for all your subjects that you can revise for.

You will be amazed at how easy revision becomes at the end of the year if you’ve already learned and started to remember the information for each of your classes. It only takes a couple of hours now, but it will save many more later on!
